Volunteer Job Descriptions

Clerk of Course:

The Clerk is responsible for all of the paperwork at the meet prior to the swimmer's event. Swimmers report to the clerk prior to their scheduled event to receive a time card with their heat and lane assignment for that event. The Clerk volunteers to help hand out event cards, get swimmers in their proper order, and walk young swimmers to their assigned lane at the start of their event.

Runners:

The Runners collect the time cards from the Timers and deliver them to the scorers after each heat.

Head Timer/Timers:

The Timers record the swimmer’s time on the card at the completion of the race. Only knowledge that is required is the working of a stopwatch. The Head Timer serves as a backup in case any lane Times have a watch malfunction. The Head Timer will provide training to the Timers if it is needed.

Starter:

* Training Required. The Starter is the person that starts the heats during the meet. They will use the starting system provided by the league.  Please see this DSSL guidance doc.

Averager/Ribbon Writer/Time Recorder/Scorer:

The Averager, Ribbon Writer, Time Recorder, and Scorer sit together with volunteers from the opposing team and organize cards after each race to determine the place and score for the swimmers.

Place Judge:

Each Place Judge will stand with a Place Judge from the opposing team at either lanes 1 or 6. Together they will watch for which lane comes in which place. This placement will be used if there is a discrepancy in place between times and scorers.
